Six operatives of Ghana’s Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI) have been dismissed following an internal investigation that uncovered a network allegedly supplying mobile phones and other prohibited items to suspects held in the agency’s custody.
According to a report by 3News, the investigation began after an officer discovered a suspect using a mobile phone during a routine inspection of holding cells on February 16, 2026.
Subsequent searches reportedly uncovered at least six mobile phones, phone accessories and a screwdriver in two holding facilities. Investigators also found evidence suggesting that some staff members had helped suspects obtain prohibited items in exchange for money.
The investigation further revealed that food deliveries arranged through relatives were allegedly used to smuggle mobile phones and accessories into the facilities.
Eight BNI operatives were investigated and subjected to internal disciplinary procedures. Six were dismissed, one was demoted, and another was cleared of wrongdoing, according to the report.
The agency has reportedly tightened its internal security measures, including additional staff checks, to prevent similar incidents.
The development raises concerns about security and accountability within intelligence facilities, where strict controls are necessary to prevent unauthorised communication and protect sensitive investigations.
