Akufo-Addo Mocks Mahama: "You Have No Classmate"
During a stakeholder engagement in Sunyani as part of his nationwide "Thank You" tour, President Akufo-Addo stated that such a debate would clarify the current state of Ghana’s economy and address misconceptions propagated by the former president regarding government policies and initiatives.
Recently, Dr. Bawumia challenged Mahama to a debate, aiming to present their differing visions and policies to the Ghanaian public. However, Mahama declined, claiming that Bawumia is not his "classmate."
In response, President Akufo-Addo humorously noted, “It’s true, Dr. Bawumia is not Mahama’s classmate; Mahama is the only one-term president in Ghana’s history.” He added, “I have classmates—former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor, both of whom served two terms. As for Mahama, he has no classmates. If he says so, I agree.”
The president expressed confidence that Dr. Bawumia would win the upcoming elections on December 7, 2024, and potentially serve a second term in 2028. He also mentioned that Mahama's refusal to debate was based on Bawumia's lack of presidential experience.
Akufo-Addo concluded his remarks by thanking the chiefs and people of the Bono region for their support over the past eight years as he prepares to retire on January 6, 2025. “I appreciate it. Bono people, thank you,” he said.
