NMC to Launch App Addressing Misinformation Ahead of 2024 Elections
The National Media Commission (NMC) is set to introduce a new media monitoring app aimed at combating misinformation and disinformation as Ghana prepares for its upcoming general elections.
This innovative app will empower both journalists and citizens to report suspicious activities in real-time at polling stations, enabling quick action against any electoral misconduct.
At a recent forum hosted by the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG), titled “Moderating the Airwaves for Peaceful and Credible Elections 2024,” NMC Executive Secretary George Sarpong expressed his optimism about the app's potential impact. He emphasized that the tool will play a crucial role in ensuring peaceful elections and protecting journalists covering the events.
Mr. Sarpong explained that the app will revolutionize the fight against misinformation by providing accurate updates directly from polling stations across the country. By allowing for immediate reporting of unusual activities, the NMC aims to enhance the integrity of the election process and offer citizens reliable information.
Additionally, he noted that anyone present at a polling station during the announcement of results will be able to record and upload footage, which the system will use to verify authenticity. In the event of disputes, this tool will provide clear evidence to help clarify incidents and address any concerns.
