Election 2024: Ajumako NDC Accuses EC of Padding Register with Over 3,000 Voters
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of conspiring with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to inflate the voters’ register in the area, alleging that over 3,000 names have been unlawfully added.
At a press conference on August 28, 2024, in Ajumako, NDC Communications Officer Galahad Alex Andoh stated that a comparison between the party's register and the one provided by the EC revealed discrepancies, including over 3,000 unapproved additions.
“That particular register given to us by our party and that given to us by the EC has some anomalies,” Andoh said. “The register has been bloated by an excess of over 3,017 names that were unlawfully transferred onto our register.”
He warned that the NDC would resist any EC attempts to manipulate the upcoming elections and demanded a clear explanation for the discrepancies.
Andoh also pointed out inconsistencies between the voters' register given to NDC leadership in Accra and the one used in recent voter exhibition exercises, suggesting these issues reflect a broader effort to favor the NPP.
“We need an explanation as to why the voters register presented to the NDC leadership in Accra is different from what is used in the voter exhibition exercise,” Andoh remarked. “We will do everything to ensure that the will of the people is accounted for. If our demands are not met, we will stage a lawful demonstration at the EC office.”
NDC constituency chairman Professor Jonathan Annan echoed these sentiments, urging party candidates and executives to scrutinize their registers closely, emphasizing that the current EC could not be trusted.
“We will ensure that the register is not bloated,” Annan stated. “We are using this medium to caution all NDC parliamentary candidates and executives to carefully scrutinize their respective registers because it is clear this current EC cannot be trusted.”
The NDC’s allegations highlight growing tensions ahead of the 2024 elections, with the party vowing to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
