The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced its ambitious plans to overhaul teacher training and improve welfare in Ghana, aiming to enhance the quality of education for all citizens.
During a press briefing at the NDC Headquarters in Accra, the party outlined its strategy to reform the education sector, focusing on the welfare and professional growth of teachers.
Key initiatives include ensuring timely promotions for teachers, launching the “Teacher Dabrɛ” Project to provide accommodation within new school buildings, and introducing special allowances for teachers in rural areas. Additionally, the NDC plans to abolish the teacher licensure examination and eliminate mandatory national service for teacher trainee graduates.
“We will prioritize the timely promotion of teachers and ensure the availability of funds for their remuneration,” said Hon. Dr. Clement Apaak, MP for Builsa South constituency. “The ‘Teacher Dabrɛ’ Project will provide accommodation facilities for teachers within new school buildings.”
The NDC’s comprehensive approach also involves collaborating with teacher unions to implement the Government Assisted Mortgage Scheme (GAMOS) and establishing a College of Education in the Afram Plains enclave. Dr. Apaak emphasized that these measures are designed to enhance teacher welfare and professional development, underscoring the party’s commitment to transforming the education sector.
