Volta NPP fights Volta NDC over UHAS' honorary doctorate degree on Akufo-Addo
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Volta Region has called on the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to substantiate their claims against President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with factual evidence before making accusations against the ruling party.
Makafui Kofi Woanya, the Volta Regional Chairman of the NPP, stated that the party will honor the President in a special congregation on July 29, 2024. This comes as the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho has also announced it will honor the President in a special congregation on the same day.UHAS claims that the award is in recognition of the President's exemplary leadership in making science education more accessible to Ghanaian families through the free Senior High School policy, prioritizing STEM education in Ghana, and the completion of the UHAS China-aided phase 2 expansion project.
However, the opposition NDC youth wing has described the move as "infuriating and unacceptable," arguing that UHAS would even consider honoring a leader whose policies and actions have "profoundly undermined the welfare and development of the Volta Region and the nation."
The NPP, on the other hand, has called on the NDC to back their claims against the President with factual evidence, rather than making unsubstantiated accusations.
The impending honoring of President Akufo-Addo by the NPP and UHAS is seen as a significant endorsement of his leadership and policies, particularly in the areas of education and infrastructure development. The strong opposition from the NDC youth wing, however, highlights the continued political tensions in the region.
