Data Price Decrease to go down by the end of 2024

The Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Dr. Joe Anokye, has assured Ghanaians that data prices may decrease in 2025.
According to Dr. Anokye, the government's push for increased internet penetration has led to calls for data prices to be decreased to allow everyone access. The rise in the cost of MTN data has been blamed on the government's significant market power (SMP) classification, but the NCA has denied this claim.
"The SMP classification aims to promote fair competition and not burden MTN's operations," Dr. Anokye said. He assured Ghanaians that data prices are expected to decrease, especially with the NGIC wholesale carrier-neutral open access.
Dr. Anokye explained that other entities, such as AT, Telecel, and MTN, will buy bulk and launch by the last quarter of the year, with more towers to be added. This, he believes, will contribute to the anticipated reduction in data prices.
The assurance from the NCA Director General comes amid growing concerns about the high cost of data in Ghana, which has been a barrier for many Ghanaians to access the internet and digital services. The government's push for increased internet penetration is seen as a crucial step in bridging the digital divide and promoting economic and social development.
If the NCA's projections materialize, Ghanaians can look forward to more affordable data services in the coming years, potentially improving their access to essential online resources and services.
