Acquire Work Skills Before Leaving Ghana, Mahama Advises Youth

Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged the youth in Ghana to acquire work skills before considering leaving the country. Mahama believes that having a marketable skill significantly increases one's chances of finding employment abroad.

Mahama made these comments during a mini durbar held at LaBawaleshie in Accra on July 18, 2024. He stressed the importance of gaining skills, especially in light of the high unemployment rates observed in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

The former president encouraged young people who have completed Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS), but have not pursued higher education, to take the opportunity to acquire a skill. He highlighted the National Apprenticeship program as a viable option for these youth to develop their skillsets.

"I would encourage those who are not in education or employment to take advantage of the National Apprenticeship program and acquire a skill," Mahama stated. "Having a skill will greatly improve your chances of finding work, even if you decide to go abroad."

Mahama emphasized that in the current job market, employers often prioritize candidates with proven skills and work experience over those without. By investing in their skills before leaving Ghana, young people can position themselves for greater success in the global job market.

The former president's advice comes at a time when unemployment, especially among the youth, remains a pressing issue in Ghana. His call for the acquisition of work skills aims to empower the youth and increase their employability, both locally and internationally.
