Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby, the former Board Chairman of the Volta River Authority (VRA), has challenged Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to explain his role at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) before criticizing the government’s new fuel levy.
Speaking on TV3, Dr. Wereko-Brobby called for accountability regarding the significant financial losses ECG incurred under Afenyo-Markin’s leadership in 2023 and 2024. He argued that until these losses are addressed, Afenyo-Markin lacks the moral authority to oppose the GH¢1 fuel levy set to take effect on July 16, 2025.
“If he can account for the huge losses that ECG suffered during his stewardship, we may begin to listen to him,” stated Dr. Wereko-Brobby.
He did not hold back, also criticizing the Minority Caucus in Parliament for their inaction while their party was in power, accusing them of trying to take credit for the current administration's efforts. Dr. Wereko-Brobby insisted that the consequences of ECG’s mismanagement should not fall on citizens through higher tariffs but should instead be shouldered by those who oversaw the company during this period.financial decline.
