Yendi, Ghana - A tense and chaotic situation unfolded at the Yendi Municipal Assembly as members failed to elect a Presiding Member (PM) after five previous unsuccessful attempts.
The meeting, convened to finally choose a PM, descended into violence and vandalism of electoral materials. During the vote recount, assembly members resorted to lifting chairs and attempting to throw them at their opponents, leading to the destruction of the voting materials.
The two candidates, Yakubu Fuseini and Alhassan Inusah Achiri, both failed to obtain the required two-thirds majority of the 44 total votes cast. The situation threatened to escalate into a serious confrontation, but was ultimately prevented from becoming a "bloodbath" due to the intervention of police officers.
Mohammed Akalifa, the Municipal Coordinating Director, condemned the unruly behavior and criticized the failure to elect a Presiding Member, stating that it was impeding the smooth administration of the assembly.
The chaotic events at the Yendi Municipal Assembly underscore the high tensions and political divisions that can arise during local government elections in Ghana. The inability to resolve the deadlock and choose a Presiding Member is likely to have significant implications for the effective functioning of the municipal administration.
As the situation remains unresolved, authorities will need to find a way to restore order and facilitate a peaceful and democratic election of the Presiding Member to ensure the proper governance of the Yendi Municipal Assembly.
