A 37-year-old Nigerian man has been freed from jail under Ghana's Justice for All program, after spending over 5 years behind bars over the mysterious death of a sex worker. The man, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, was arrested in 2019 following the death of a prostitute in his hotel room in Accra.
In a statement made after his release, the man claimed he had come to Ghana to engage in fraud, enticed by the country's more reliable electricity supply compared to Nigeria. He said he had been living with an accomplice and they had an agreement to share profits from successful scams, with the man taking a smaller cut.
However, the man alleged that after one successful fraud operation, his partner - whom he referred to as the "chairman" - decided to take 70% of the earnings, leading to a dispute. The man said he took the remaining 30% and left the hotel for a week.
Upon returning to the hotel, the man claimed he went out to seek the services of a prostitute, which ultimately led to his downfall. The sex worker mysteriously died in his hotel room, resulting in his arrest.
Remarkably, the man stated that since his arrest in 2019, he had never been formally arraigned before a court, and had been kept in remand custody all this time.
Now a free man, the Nigerian national said he would be returning to his home country and would never engage in fraud again.
