Ghana to Reintroduce Road and Bridge Tolls in 2025 to Boost Infrastructure Funding
Accra, Ghana - In a move aimed at improving infrastructure funding and management, Ghana's Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has announced plans to reintroduce road and bridge tolls in 2025.
The decision, which has been granted approval by the Cabinet, is part of the government's strategy to generate additional revenue for the development and maintenance of the country's transportation networks.
"The reintroduction of road and bridge tolls is a necessary measure to ensure the proper funding and management of our critical infrastructure," Dr. Amin Adam stated during a press briefing.
The announcement has sparked a debate among Ghanaian citizens, with some viewing the move as a positive step towards addressing the funding challenges faced by the infrastructure sector. However, others have expressed concerns that the reintroduction of tolls would further burden citizens financially.
Alongside the plan to reinstate road and bridge tolls, the Cabinet has also approved the disbursement of an additional GHC1.5 billion to settle outstanding claims relating to financial management companies. This decision is aimed at addressing outstanding liabilities and providing a framework for the successful reintroduction of the toll system in 2025.
"We understand the concerns raised by citizens, and we are committed to developing a fair and equitable toll system that balances the need for infrastructure funding with the financial well-being of the people," Dr. Amin Adam added.
The government has stated that it will engage with various stakeholders, including civil society groups and transportation associations, to ensure that the reintroduction of road and bridge tolls is implemented in a manner that is transparent and responsive to the needs of the Ghanaian public.
As the country prepares for the reintroduction of the toll system, the government's focus will be on ensuring that the revenue generated from these tolls is utilized effectively for the maintenance and improvement of Ghana's critical transportation infrastructure.
