Forest Encroachment Crackdown in Greater Accra

Greater Accra Regional Minister cautions encroachers selling lands in forest reserves

Addressing members of the Regional Coordinating Council

Greater Accra, Ghana - The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Titus Glover, has issued a stern warning to residents in the Dodowa and Akuapem areas against the unauthorized clearing and sale of lands within the Dodowa and Katamanso forest reserves.
This comes after the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs informed the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) about unscrupulous individuals from Akuapem encroaching on and selling off parts of the protected Dodowa forest.
"The Regional House of Chiefs informed us of the way people from Akuapem have descended on Dodowa town and just selling the lands; when you walk by the road, you see the forest, but when you enter, it is all gone," Glover stated.
In response, REGSEC, in partnership with the Forestry Commission, plans to launch a major tree planting exercise to restore the affected forest areas and reclaim the encroached lands, which will subsequently be declared security zones.
The regional minister also urged the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to intensify their revenue mobilization efforts, as the current internal revenue generation figures fall short of the expected targets.
To bolster security and cleanliness in the region, Glover revealed that the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) will be distributing streetlights to MMDAs and initiating comprehensive clean-up exercises in city centers across Greater Accra.
